A Deep Dive into the Tartan Design Process: From Concept to Finished Fabric
Creating a bespoke tartan is a journey that blends history, artistry, and craftsmanship. From the initial idea to the final woven fabric, each step is a careful balance of tradition and innovation. Here’s a detailed look at how a custom tartan comes to life.
Defining the Vision
Every tartan begins with a story. The design process starts with understanding the client’s vision; whether it’s a golf club, distillery, or private commission. This involves researching the club’s heritage, colours, and values to ensure the tartan embodies its identity. We look at significant events in the club’s history, stories that are told through club houses and people that have helped shape the club throughout the years.
Choosing Colours & Inspiration
Colour selection is crucial in tartan design. Shades may be inspired by historical references, the natural surroundings of a location, or existing branding elements.
Each hue carries meaning, the landscape is easy to take inspiration from, but what makes the design unique is the addition of colours from unlikely sources. The palette has to be visually appealing and commercially viable, which consideration of final design taken at every stage.
Designing the Tartan Pattern
Using specialized tartan design software, the pattern is crafted by arranging warp and weft threads in a specific sequence. The interplay of colours and line thickness creates a visually appealing and balanced design. At this stage, variations are explored to find the perfect composition. The sett of the tartan can often tell a story as well, using vertical and horizontal lines to visually represent elements of the club.
Approval & Registration
Once the design is finalized, it is presented to the client for approval. After refinements, the tartan can be officially registered with The Scottish Register of Tartans, ensuring its authenticity and exclusivity.
Selecting Materials & Weaving
We generally weave tartan using 100% lambswool at around 13oz. This composition and weight offers a wide opportunity to use the fabric for many applications such as kilt making, apparel, accessories and interiors.
Finishing & Production
Once woven, the fabric undergoes finishing processes such as washing, pressing, and cutting. From here, it can be tailored into garments, accessories, or interior pieces, ready to be sold and drive new revenue.
A Legacy Woven in Fabric
A bespoke tartan is more than just a textile, it’s a legacy. Each thread tells a story, and the final fabric becomes a timeless emblem of identity and tradition. Whether for a golf club or a brand, a custom tartan is a powerful way to celebrate history while embracing the future.
